How to Design a Business Flyer in Canva: A Beginner’s Guide
A useful flyer helps a reader understand an offer and take the next step. You do not need a page full of effects to achieve that. This guide walks through a fictional Nigerian lunch business, Kora Kitchen, using a workflow you can practise with Canva Free. The example is a design exercise, not a real offer or a client endorsement.
Start with the offer, audience and action
Before opening the editor, write three sentences: who the flyer is for, what it offers and what the reader should do next. For the fictional lunch business, the audience is nearby office workers, the offer is a weekday preorder and the next step is checking the menu and ordering instructions. This is more useful than a vague request to make something beautiful.
Collect the exact business name, approved price, date, location if relevant and contact instruction. Ask the business owner to approve these details. A visually attractive flyer with an incorrect price or missing ordering step has failed its basic job. Use fictional contact details for coursework and keep private customer information out of design files.
Choose the output before choosing a template
For a digital practice image, create a 1080 × 1080 pixel square. If you need a portrait story, create a separate 1080 × 1920 layout and recompose the content rather than stretching the square. Confirm current platform specifications and likely interface overlays before publishing real work. These practice dimensions are starting points, not a guarantee that every platform crop will preserve your content.
For print, agree a physical size with the printer. A5 is 148 × 210 mm. Ask about bleed, crop marks, colour workflow and the required PDF settings. A social image does not become print ready because it has been saved with a different file name. Keep digital and print versions separate so each can be checked for its intended use.
Build a three-level reading order
Arrange the main offer, supporting details and action as three visual levels. Try a short headline such as “Lunch, sorted.”, a supporting line explaining the preorder and a clearly labelled action. Make the price visible beside the relevant offer. A fictional example price can be used in practice, but never invent discounts or commercial claims for a real business.
Use one type family with a few weights, or two families with clear roles. Keep line breaks deliberate and avoid long passages in capitals. Start with the content, not an effect. If the supporting information is too small, shorten it or change the arrangement before shrinking every text box. Export a proof and inspect it at phone size, because editor zoom can conceal readability problems.
Use spacing, alignment and contrast deliberately
Choose a shared alignment edge and use consistent gaps between related elements. A price belongs close to the product it describes; the ordering action should not be lost in unrelated decorative objects. Whitespace can separate groups and strengthen the focal point. It is not automatically a problem that needs to be filled.
Give colours specific jobs: background, text and action accent. Check the actual foreground and background pair. WCAG uses a minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio for ordinary text and 3:1 for qualifying large text; exported size matters, so a number in Canva’s font control is not enough to establish the large-text exception. If text lies on a photograph, test the area behind the letters. A solid backing panel may be more reliable than a shadow.
Choose images you can use and crop them carefully
Use an original photograph or an asset whose licence permits the intended use. A downloadable image is not automatically free for commercial use. Keep a small asset log identifying the source and any relevant conditions. Canva library content has usage rules; do not assume recolouring a stock illustration gives you exclusive trademark rights. Check Canva’s current content-use guidance when a use is uncertain.
Crop to preserve the product and leave a calm area for text. Do not stretch a photograph to fit a new aspect ratio. If a source is blurry, find a larger original or reduce its displayed size; exporting more pixels cannot reliably recreate missing detail. A simple original shape-based illustration can be a sensible alternative when a suitable permitted photograph is unavailable.
Complete the work with Canva Free
You can practise the essential workflow with a free account: arrange text and shapes, use permitted free elements, duplicate pages and create manual adaptations in separate document sizes. If a chosen asset or feature is paid, replace it with an available free or original alternative. This is a practical design decision, not a reason to use another person’s paid account.
Available export formats and controls depend on the design and current Canva plan. Some features, such as particular transparent-background or print colour options, may require a paid plan. Do not describe those as included in a free workflow. For commercial print, confirm an acceptable delivery method with the printer rather than promising settings you have not verified.
Export, inspect and hand off the correct files
For digital distribution, a PNG is often useful for graphics with text, while a JPG can be useful for photographic images when file size matters. Choose the output for the actual use and inspect it independently. If printing, use the PDF settings agreed with the printer, then check physical size, page selection, text and images. A PDF file extension alone does not prove that a job is production ready.
Use meaningful names such as KoraKitchen_square_v01.png and KoraKitchen_A5_proof.pdf. A review copy does not usually need full edit access. Test shared viewing links while signed out, retain your editable master and include a short note explaining which file is for which purpose. Do not show real client work in a portfolio without the necessary permission.
Improve one decision at a time
Ask a reviewer what they notice first, what they think is being offered and what they would do next. Specific feedback leads to a testable revision. “The ordering line is hard to read on my phone” is more useful than “make it pop”. Keep a before and after version and explain what changed.
If you want a structured path, Graphic Design with Canva at Blue Stack Fire includes lessons, quizzes and a reviewed fictional campaign project for ₦8,900 as a one-time course payment. It is an independent academy course; Canva subscriptions are separate, and completion does not guarantee clients or employment. Start with the free lesson to judge the teaching before enrolling.
Before you send: the flyer checklist
- The intended audience and next action are clear.
- The approved name, price, dates and contact instruction are correct.
- The offer, supporting details and action have a readable order.
- Text is readable at the actual delivered size and has suitable contrast.
- Images have natural proportions and documented usage permission.
- Digital and print dimensions and settings were checked separately.
- Every exported file opens correctly and contains the intended pages.
- The recipient can open the review link with appropriate permissions.
